On Baking Fish

Baking fish is one the best and easiest ways to prepare a wonderful dinner. Cooking fish in the oven is not only easy, it is also quick, and doesn’t require an expensive trip to the store to get ingredients.

Whether you are baking fish in a casserole dish, a pan, or even tin foil, the dinner you make will be delicious and even healthy.

The types of fish you can bake are numerous, with cod being a popular option. Flounder works well, as does haddock, halibut, striper, heck the list goes on. Let just say, any type you find, you can bake, and enjoy.

Baking Fish: The Basics
To get started, all you really need is the seafood, something to cook it in, and a liquid. I like to use individual casserole dishes to bake in, as you can serve that and keep all the juices. A simple 6″ to 9″ dish will work.

Baking fish in a pan is another method. This way allows you to cook everything in one container, unlike the individual casserole dishes, where you must use one for each person you are cooking fish for. But, clean up for one pan is much easier than cleaning several dishes.

Another great way for baking fish is by using foil. Lay the foil out on a counter, raise the edges of it to create an area inside, and place some vegetables, the fish, and a liquid in it. This is great not only for the home, but also for baking over an open fire, camping, etc.

Baking Fish: Healthy Eating
While there are many ways of baking fish that are heavier on the fat and calories, there also an equal number of methods that add very little fat and calories, if any.

Butter, for example, adds lots of flavor, and is often used with seafood. But it isn’t required. A good dish can be made with just a little bit of olive oil, or even no fat at all. Putting a little water and lemon juice in the cooking container will keep it moist, and add a little flavor, and add practically zero calories or fat, while still tasting great.

Cooking veggies while you cook the fish adds a side, that is also nutritious and healthy. Add a little salt and pepper to bring out the flavors.

Baking Fish: Liquids
Liquid is very important while baking fish, as it not only adds flavor and aroma, but also keeps the dish moist. There are lots of different ones that you can use. The most common are water, with a little bit of white wine and lemon juice. Don’t think that is all, though. You can play around with the amounts, and even add other ingredients to get the taste you want. Try adding stuff such as basil, bay leaves, bacon, milk, celery, caraway seeds, saffron, thyme, tarragon, shallots, garlic, vinegar, etc. just to name a few. Any of these in the liquid will add flavor and aroma, and make a unique dish that will be very pleasing.

Baking Fish: Fats
Adding just a little bit of fat can result in a very delicious dish. Butter is probably the number one fat to add, and goes very very well with the flavor of the fish itself. Olive oil is also another good addition, although the flavor it brings is less pronounced than butter. Lard is another idea, and is healthier than butter. Chorizo adds texture, flavor, and fat. Again, these are just a few examples. The sky is the limit here.

Baking Fish: Toppings
Last of all, you may want to add a topping. This can be simple, such as crushed Ritz cracker crumbs; these go very well with baked fish. A seafood stuffing is another delicious topping, that adds an entire layer to the meal. Breadcrumbs are another simple topping. You can even add vegetables, such as zucchini, or tomatoes, onions, etc. Don’t be shy, if there is a food you think of while baking fish, chances are, it will work as a great topping, and the result will be very good.
