Proper nutrition is the foundation of lifelong health and it should begin earlier on in life.If you give your children a well-balanced nutrition, they will have the strength, stamina, alertness needed to complete tasks both at home and in school. They will also have a more positive disposition. Read on if you’re the parent of a finicky eater, or you just want your children to teach your child how to eat healthy.
Set an example
Your child will have a natural preference for the healthy foods if they also see you making healthy food choices. You will only confuse the child if you’re going to indulge on French fries and soft drinks while you’re telling them to take in more fruits and vegetables.
Cook more at home, dine out less
Home-cooked meals are healthier since they don’t have ingredients that are unnecessary for human consumption like food colorings, flavor enhancers, and preservatives. You can also let the kids help you prepare the dish and let this serve as a way to spend more quality time with them. This activity will also teach your kids the importance of a well-balanced diet.In addition, experts agree that kids who are allowed to help in the kitchen are more inclined to try new dishes than those who do not.

Be familiar with the new food pyramid for kids
The USDA has made some changes to the food group pyramid recently. In lieu of the old food pyramid for kids, we have a food plate. The new symbol and old food pyramid for kids assert the same messages, and these are to eat a variety of foods, and to eat less of some foods and more of others. The food pyramid had six vertical stripes to represent the five food groups plus oils.
The food plate in contrast features 4 partitions representing vegetables, fruits, grains, and protein, and a small circle beside the plate representing dairy products.Just like the former food pyramid for kids, the food plate is partitioned in a way that the grains component is larger than the protein component since kids require more carbs.Healthy grain options include brown bread and oatmeal.Good protein sources include poultry, beef, nuts, lentils, and veggie burgers.Believing that the food pyramid was not simple enough for kids to understand and parents to implement, the First Lady Michelle Obama presented the food plate as an alternative.
Teach your kids proper nutrition in a fun way
Forcing your children to eat healthy foods is futile. You need to be innovative to think up ways on how to motivate your children to choose more healthful food items. For example, you can top a bowl of whole grain cereal with a smiley face made of banana slices for eyes, a grape for the nose, and an apple slice for the lips.
Serve fruits and vegetables with favorite foods to increase acceptance. For instance you can give them homemade blueberry muffins, zucchini bread, and carrot cake. When doing groceries, bring your kids so they can pick out fruits they want to try.
